Opening hours and last admission

Topkapi Palace is open from 09:00 to 17:00, except on Tuesdays. The last admission is at 16:00, so visitors should arrive well before it.

Some galleries and interior rooms may begin closing before the palace grounds. If you want to visit the Imperial Harem, Treasury, Holy Relics and the main pavilions without rushing, plan to enter no later than 15:00.

The palace may operate under different arrangements on religious holidays, national holidays and special-event days.

Admission and ticket requirements

A valid admission ticket is required to enter the museum areas beyond the First Courtyard. All visitors must pass through security screening, including those holding prepaid or timed-entry tickets.

Ticket inclusions can vary between admission products, guided tours and third-party packages. Always check whether your selected ticket includes the Imperial Harem, Hagia Irene and an audio guide before completing your booking.

Visitors using reduced or free admission may be asked to present a passport, student card, disability document or other valid identification. Children aged 0–6 can currently visit free of charge when accompanied by an adult.

Best time to visit

For a quieter experience, arrive close to opening time, particularly on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday mornings. Visitor numbers generally increase between late morning and mid-afternoon.

For fewer crowds

Arrive between 09:30 and 11:00 and begin with the Imperial Harem or the most popular interior collections.

For photography and views

Late afternoon offers softer light across the courtyards and Bosphorus terraces. However, you will have less time to visit the interior rooms.

During summer

Morning visits are more comfortable because much of the route involves walking through open courtyards with limited shade.

During winter

The palace is generally less crowded, but rain can make stone and cobbled surfaces slippery.

The recently expanded Harem route through the Courtyard of the Consorts and Concubines adds approximately 20 minutes to the visit.
Remember to include walking time, security screening and possible queues at popular rooms.

Getting there

Topkapi Palace is located in Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula, within walking distance of Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet Square.

By tram

Take the T1 Kabataş–Bağcılar tram and get off at either:

Sultanahmet: Best for visitors arriving through Sultanahmet Square.
Gülhane: A convenient alternative with an uphill walk toward the palace.

Both stations are on the same T1 line.

By Marmaray

Get off at Sirkeci Station and walk uphill through Gülhane or connect to the T1 tram.

By taxi

Road access around Sultanahmet is restricted. Taxis may not be able to stop directly at the palace gate, especially during busy hours. Allow time to complete the final part of the journey on foot.

Entrances and meeting points

Main visitor entrance

The main approach is through the Imperial Gate — Bab-ı Hümayun, located on Babı Hümayun Street near Hagia Sophia and the Fountain of Ahmed III.

This gate leads into the First Courtyard. Continue through the courtyard toward the Gate of Salutation — Babüsselam, where the main ticket-controlled palace visit begins.

Meeting points for booked tickets and tours

Tour and ticket meeting points are not always located at the palace gate. If your booking includes assistance, a host or a licensed guide, use the exact location and arrival time shown on your confirmation.

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled meeting time. Do not enter the palace independently before meeting your representative unless your booking instructions tell you to do so.

Accessibility and facilities

Topkapi Palace is a large historic complex with cobbled paths, uneven surfaces, thresholds and stairs. The principal courtyards provide the easiest routes for visitors with limited mobility, but some parts of the Harem, Treasury and elevated pavilions are not fully step-free.

Visitors using wheelchairs or mobility aids should allow extra time and ask museum staff for the most suitable available route.

Visitor rules

Help protect the palace and its collections by following these rules:

Do not touch historic objects, walls or decorative surfaces.
Food and drinks are not permitted inside exhibition rooms.
Smoking and electronic cigarettes are prohibited inside.
Pushchairs are not permitted inside interior rooms.
Animals are not admitted.
Weapons and sharp or dangerous objects are prohibited.
Follow the marked visitor route and staff instructions.
Speak quietly inside the galleries.
Dress respectfully when entering the Chamber of the Holy Relics.

Under the rules updated in May 2026, visitors may take personal photographs inside open interiors using a mobile phone without flash, provided they do not obstruct visitor circulation. Cameras and vlogging equipment require separate permission, and photography may still be prohibited in marked rooms.

Visiting with children and groups

Families are welcome, but the palace requires considerable walking. Comfortable shoes, water and regular rest breaks are recommended.

Visiting with children

Children aged 0–6 can visit individually with a parent or guardian.
Pushchairs cannot be taken inside interior rooms.
Keep children close near stairs, terraces and crowded galleries.
A shorter route focusing on the courtyards, Treasury and palace views may be more comfortable for young children.

Group visits

Groups should gather outside busy gateways and avoid blocking visitor circulation. Guided groups of more than eight people must use a headset system inside the museum.

School groups must be accompanied by a licensed active tourist guide and follow the reservation requirements set by National Palaces. Organised school groups for children aged 0–6 are not admitted, although children in this age range may visit individually with their families.

New Harem rooms are open

The Courtyard of the Consorts and Concubines has reopened following restoration. The expanded route includes residential and service areas and adds approximately 20 minutes to a typical Harem visit.

Clock Museum is open

More than 300 Ottoman and European timepieces are now displayed in the former Imperial Stables in the Second Courtyard.

Summer 2026 Mehter performances

Mehter performances are scheduled at Topkapi Palace on Wednesdays until 30 September 2026. Performance times should be confirmed before visiting.

Porcelain Museum

A new Porcelain Museum has been announced for the Imperial Mint complex, but it should continue to be marked as “in preparation” until an official opening announcement is published.
